Woodland Job Corps Center
Nestled conveniently between the cities of Baltimore and Washington DC, The Woodland Job Corps Center is located in Laurel, MD. Approximately thirty minutes from each city, Woodland is stationed on several acres of land with wonderful landscaping and a college type setting.

The Woodland Job Corps Center provides academic and career technical training to three hundred young men and women. Students who do not have their high school diploma are offered an online high school diploma class, GED preparation classes, or GED classes through the Step Up to Success program at Anne Arundel Community College. To supplement their academic training, students also have the opportunity to participate in the STARS program. As a participant in the STARS program students receive tutoring and mentoring by members of the community.

STARS is a program commonly referred to as Student, Teachers, Achievement, Retention, Success that is known for its community service tutoring efforts. STARS is one of the many education initiatives located on the campus of the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, MD. Students who are housed at our Center, who do not perform as well as they would like in the daytime academic classes, are able to sign up for additional intensive tutoring services. These tutors are of many different age groups and ethnicities, they come from many areas surrounding the Woodland Center, and they have a strong desire to help young people to better their lives.

Many of our underperforming students, who attend STARS in the evenings, have achieved substantial gains on The Adult Basic Education (TABE) Test as well as the ASVAB military test. STARS also serves as a mentoring program, wherein many students are linked with personal mentors who travel the extra mile to help them achieve success socially and academically. We are very grateful to have STARS located at the Woodland Job Corps Center and available to our students.

As a complement to their academic training, students receive career technical training in eight vocational trades. Students can choose from high or low voltage electrical wiring, painting, carpentry, facilities maintenance, health occupations training, culinary arts, and business technology. As students near completion of their trade, they receive intensive job preparation support through Woodland’s GRAD-90 program. GRAD-90 is  program that has been designed to assist students in job development, fine tuning their career success standard skills, and ultimately finding and keeping a job in their chosen vocation.

Once the training day is over, students return to their dorm and prepare for social development and recreational activities. There are four dormitories on Center, two for women and two for men. After students have checked in for daily roll call, the recreation department offers daily activities and events to keep students engaged during non-training hours. As a result of Woodland’s close proximity to both Baltimore and Washington DC, students are often given the opportunity to participate in events happening in either of those cities. Students can also choose to participate in athletics such as soccer, basketball, flag football, and softball.

Offering students academic, career technical and independent living skills training, Woodland’s primary goal is to prepare each young man and woman to be a productive employee and citizen. With this as a goal, the Woodland Center staff works with each individual student on their own personal career development plan to provide the best opportunity to leave with the skills necessary to make them successful when they return to their hometown communities.
