Although rain was predicted, the day gave way to sunshine, as students cleaned the beds and transplanted phlox at Mendon Senior Center. The students learned about right tools for the job and studied techniques for hand pruning, stick edging beds, and applying mulch. The teamwork with the elder volunteers from the Mendon Senior Center was outstanding and gave students the chance to share information about Job Corps and the Center’s many successes.
Over at the Global Village Farms, students had to fight back mayflies and navigate rough New England farm soil in order to construct a new greenhouse. They discovered and removed numerous field stones in the way of the greenhouse construction. The wind picked up on the second day and the mayflies thankfully found other places to go in the woods, which allowed the students to raise the greenhouse and form the structure for the heavy gauge plastic greenhouse roof. The structure will extend the growing season for Global Village Farms.
