The Gary Job Corps Center is located San Marcos, TX, approximately 30 miles from Austin. Gary is the largest Center in Job Corps, housing 1434 residential students, with an additional 37 non-residential students. It offers vocational training in 18 trades, high school diploma programs, a high school equivalency program and college certification/degree programs through Austin Community College. Gary students are from the state of Texas, primarily Houston, Central Texas and South Texas.
The Gary Center is one of the original Job Corps Centers, founded in 1964, on what was formerly San Marcos Army Air Field. San Marcos is home to Texas State University, as well as the renowned recreation available on the San Marcos and Blanco Rivers.
Students can participate in the Student Government Association, peer leadership classes, seasonal sports teams, weightlifting, bowling and arts & crafts. They also enjoy educational field trips, job site visits and offsite recreational activities.
Students are active members of the San Marcos community and provide community services to various organizations such as the Salvation Army, San Marcos Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and United Way San Antonio & Bexar County.
